The Hero’s Journey:
A Summer Camp of Mythic Proportions
August 7 – August 11th
Ages 7-12: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Campers will use the foundations of the hero’s journey to explore what it means to be a hero in society today. While exploring myths from around the world, campers will learn the fundamentals of Filament’s ensemble and storytelling techniques. Throughout the week, campers will create larger-than-life characters, original songs, and their very own hero’s journey.
Why Filament Camp?
Filament Camp is special. At Filament Camp, there are no scripts and no assigned roles–each camper creates their own dream role. Campers create their own dialogue, characters, stories, and costumes.
Through drama and creative play, Filament’s experienced teaching artists focus the days to explore creative problem solving, teamwork, confident public speaking, analysis of classic texts, speaking directly to the audience, and community engagement.
WHAT TO EXPECT
We will play fun, imaginative games that encourage the students of all ages to work together, gain confidence, and build their performance skills. They will learn about building characters, using their voices, working as an ensemble, performing with music and/or instruments, and how to tell a story and convey emotions with their body. Throughout the week, campers participate in break-out activities according to age group, to ensure everyone is supported and challenged.
The one-week process culminates in a short performance of brand-new, never before seen stories and characters created by students. Friends and family are encouraged to attend the performance, at 2:30pm on Friday, August 11th.

“We got to make up our own play and it was fun to use my imagination and work with other kids. My teacher was nice, funny and she encouraged us in learning how to act and make the best play.” – Brynn M.
“We love Filament performances for the sheer talent of their cast, the wonderful, ingenious set design and for their creativity and imagination, and that comes through in their classes too. Our daughter LOVED her class and was so excited to attend every week. The kids learned how to use their own creativity to inspire a one-of-a-kind performance. We can’t wait for the next session!” – Lori M.
