Filament Theatre: Where Families Come to Play!
In 2017, Filament Theatre celebrated our tenth anniversary as one of Chicago’s most acclaimed theatres for young and family audiences. As the anchor cultural organization for the historic Six Corners Shopping District for the past five years, Filament has been a leader in the revival of this Northwest Side neighborhood.
Filament Theatre believes in the transformational power of the performing arts in the lives of young people. To this end, we create immersive and site-specific theatre that inspires, empowers, and activates young people and their communities. We envision a future in which the leaders of tomorrow approach others with radical empathy, serving as ambassadors for their communities and stewards of the Earth.
As one eight-year-old audience member said, “I like stories because they help me practice my feelings.” Young people need stories to help them practice encountering new worlds, meeting new people, and adapting to new situations. That is why Filament Theatre creates imaginary worlds in which young people can strengthen those imaginative skills by participating in these hands-on stories.
As we prepare for our next decade of work, Filament Theatre is expanding our programs to serve every type of family. In addition to year-round theatrical programming which includes performances both at our theatre as well as in other local locations (such as a Fannie’s Cafe or City Newsstand), Filament is now welcoming families to classes and camps where young people write, design and perform their own ensemble-based shows, as well as increasing the number of our low-cost field trips, in-school residencies, and workshops. We are also expanding our programs that serve families with special needs by adding “sensory-friendly” performances and support tools for families who might not otherwise feel comfortable going to the theatre.
If you are interested in volunteering your time to help Filament reach these goals, we invite you to fill out this application form. We look forward to hearing what kinds of skills, resources, and ideas you can bring to this incredible family theatre. Thank you!
