A noiseless, patient spider,
I mark’d, where, on a little promontory, it stood, isolated;
Mark’d how, to explore the vacant, vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself;
Ever unreeling them—ever tirelessly speeding them

And you, O my Soul, where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing,—seeking the spheres, to connect them;
Till the bridge you will need, be form’d—till the ductile anchor hold;
Till the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere, O my Soul.
        -Walt Whitman

           A noiseless, patient spider:
It is the mission of the Filament Theatre Ensemble to connect with and empower the child in everyone.

           It lauch’d forth filament, filament, filament:
By creating original, ensemble-based theater, we are able to send a little piece of ourselves into the world, connect with someone else, and together leave with a stronger understanding of ourselves, each other, and the greater community. By joyfully creating original works or imaginatively reexamining existing works, we seek new ways to approach stories with an ensemble spirit.

           Til the bridge you will need be form’d:
As we cast our web, connecting us at more and more points, we are able to ceaselessly muse, venture, and seek, bravely exploring worlds beyond our own. Empowerment is born though connection, and as an integral part of a larger, stronger web, each person is able to push his limits farther than he ever would alone. In rehearsal we create an atmosphere where the ensemble is safe to take risks, and in performance, we create an ethos that empowers a multi-generational audience to release their defenses and explore their vacant vast surroundings.

           Til the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere:
Through an exploration of diverse theatrical styles and an integration of the arts, the Filament Theatre Ensemble sparks the imagination, awakens the child within us all, and, like Whitman’s spider, ever reaches to connect the spheres.
